Microplastics and Heart Health: What We Know So Far

What are microplastics?

Researchers have detected these particles in human blood and other tissues, prompting further investigation into how they may affect overall health.
What does the research show?
Research into microplastics and cardiovascular disease is still evolving, but recent studies have raised important questions.
Scientists have identified microplastics in arterial plaque and in the blood supplying the heart. In a 2026 European study, researchers found microplastic and nanoplastic particles more frequently in patients who had experienced a heart attack than in those with healthy coronary arteries. They also observed higher levels in people who smoked and those with greater long-term exposure to air pollution.
Although these findings suggest a possible relationship, they do not prove that microplastics directly cause heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. Like many areas of medical research, scientists must continue studying these findings over time before they can fully understand the role microplastics may play in cardiovascular health.
Protecting your heart
There is currently no proven way to completely eliminate exposure to microplastics. Although complete avoidance is unrealistic, patients can reduce their exposure by avoiding microwaving food in plastic containers, choosing glass or ceramic for hot foods when practical, replacing heavily scratched plastic containers, and drinking filtered tap water when appropriate. These simple changes may help reduce exposure as researchers continue to learn more about the long-term effects of microplastics.
Research into microplastics continues to evolve, and future studies will help clarify whether these particles play a direct role in cardiovascular disease. In the meantime, decades of research continue to support managing well-established cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.
