What VO2 Max Can Tell You About Your Heart Health

VO2 max has become a trending topic in the fitness world, particularly with the rise of popular wearable technologies. Many new devices can estimate VO2 max during your workouts and even track changes over time.

While VO2 max can be a useful tool for understanding your fitness level, it also provides insight into your overall cardiovascular fitness and heart health.

What is VO2 max?

VO2 max measures how much oxygen your body can use during exercise. It reflects how well your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles work together during physical activity.

Generally, a higher VO2 max suggests the body is using oxygen more efficiently, while lower numbers may reflect lower cardiovascular fitness or reduced endurance. Research has shown that lower cardiovascular fitness levels are associated with a higher risk of heart disease and other health concerns.

VO2 max naturally changes with age and can also be affected by factors such as activity level, certain medical conditions, medications, and overall health.

How is VO2 max measured?

VO2 max can be measured during exercise testing performed in a medical or fitness setting. Some smart watches and wearable devices can also estimate VO2 max using heart rate, pace, and activity data.

These wearable estimates are not exact measurements, but they may still help people monitor fitness trends and changes over time.

How can you improve VO2 max?

Improving VO2 max typically involves improving overall heart and lung health through regular physical activity. This may include:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • High-intensity interval training
  • Strength training

For many, consistency is more important than intensity, especially for those just beginning a fitness routine.

Other lifestyle factors, such as sleep, nutrition, stress management, smoking cessation, and maintaining a healthy weight, can also support heart health and cardiovascular fitness.

When to talk to your doctor about VO2 max

A low VO2 max estimate does not automatically mean there is a heart problem. However, symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, or reduced exercise tolerance should not be ignored.

If you notice concerning symptoms during activity or have questions about your cardiovascular fitness and heart health, it may be time to speak with your healthcare provider.

At the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, our team helps patients better understand their cardiovascular health and identify risk factors early. We can help evaluate symptoms, discuss prevention strategies, and recommend the next steps for your heart health.
