Nuclear Stress Test

Preparations

  1. NO CAFFEINE (coffee, tea, sodas, and chocolate, including decaffenated) for 12 HOURS prior to the test.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes; do not wear shirts or blouses with metal buttons or metal zippers. Wear confortable shoes such as tennis shoes - NO FLIP-FLOPS or BOOTS please.
  3. If test is before 12 o'clock noon, nothing by mouth after midnight. If test is after 12 o'clock noon, then have a light, low fat breakfast, then nothing by mouth after 8am.
  4. Plan for the test to take 2 1/2 - 3 hours.
  5. If you do not receive a call within 24 hours of your test, please contact our office for instructions. Please check your voicemail for confirmation before calling the office.

Medication Instructions

Call your pharmacist with questions regarding any of your medication classifications

PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN

  1. Hold the following medications the MORNING of the test:

    1. Aspirin taken for headache/migrain therapy (daily aspirin regimen for cardiac therapy may be taken).

    2. Oral diabetic medications: Examples include Glucophage (Metformin), Actos, Avandia, Glipizide.

    3. Insulin: take 1/2 of the usual morning dose; bring the remaining half to the appointment.

  2. Hold the following medications the night before and the morning of the test:

    1. Nitrates: Examples include Nitrobid, Imdur, Nitrodur, Isosorbide, Isordil, Transderm-Nitro

    2. Beta-Blockers (If your generic medication ends in "olol" it is most likely a beta blocker). Examples include Atenolol (Tenormin), Bisoprolol (Zebeta), Carvedilol (Coreg), Metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL), Propranolol (Inderal)

  3. Hold the following medication 24 HOURS prior to the test:

    1. Aggrenox, Persantine, and Dipyridamole

    2. Levitra, Cialis, and Viagra

  4. If you are on Theophyline, take as directed. When you arrive for your test, please notify the nurse or technologist that you are taking this medication.

PLEASE TAKE ALL OTHER MEDICATINS AS YOUR NORMALLY WOULD WITH A SIP OF WATER. BRING THOSE YOU HELD WITH YOU TO THE TEST.
